New Year, New Self

First and foremost, Happy New Year to each and every one of you! Cheers to a great year that is 2017, stay mirthful, blissful and wonderful ad infinitum!🎆🎇🎉 I reckon that as of now, every place on earth has logged out of 2016 and logged into 2017 in high spirits.

Don’t even start asking how I spent my New Year’s Eve. I’m usually a night owl, but last night, my body was drained as my eyes were heavy. I hit the hay at around 9-ish and just slept the night away. This is my first time missing out on New Year’s firework show, oh, and the movies! They must’ve aired some good blockbuster flicks on TV last night.

A little rewind to last year, the last two months of it were excruciatingly strenuous as I began my seventh semester and hence, final work. The amount of stress it has put on me is unbelievable. Cannot wait ’til the weight is off my shoulder, and I can find my peace of mind.

I want to go back to old routine of working on myself physically and pick up new ones that are good for mental health, like painting, writing, reading, etc. I also started reaching out to middle school pals I’d fallen out of touch again on social media, we’re still making up our minds for the date of our catch-up. Our first ever catch-up in coon’s age.

Seems like only yesterday I was about to start my first year in uni and adjust to the new phase, but sure enough it was three years and two months ago. I’m handing in my thesis proposal soon to apply for a supervisor afterward,  and looking forward to graduating this November. Time glides on that fast, it’s insane. We’re in the verge of adulthood now.

My New Year’s goal dramatically changed from passing all classes with good GPA to having both a degree and a good job under my belt by the time I welcome next year. (That’s a glow-up, y’all.) Let’s keep our fingers crossed that everything will pan out. ❤

Speaking of my thesis, when cooping myself up in the library and reading loads of research papers last week, something caught my attention. You know, that particular section where the authors kind of list down their life mottos, favorite quotes and whatnot? I was dipping into one of my reading materials and lighting upon, I swear, the most thought-provoking and eye-opening quotes I’ve read, which is so relevant to the situation I’m facing these days.

If you listen to your fears, you will die never knowing what a great person you might have been.

Sometimes I get too caught up in my own fears, insecurities and self-doubts. They bring nothing but stress and anxiety, and I hate that they keep holding me back mentally from taking opportunities or doing what I want. Thereupon, I agree that the key to solving this kind of problem is to not pay heed to them at all.

Oftentimes when I was offered good opportunities in the past, I kinda had a feeling that I should give them a shot and that there’s a chance I could nail them. But then, the irksome concerns started to creep in and got me backing out—letting those opportunities slide. God knows how many boats I have missed for listening to my very own trepidation.

So tired of always giving in to these fears, I’ve gotta start coming to grips with them already. It is at times like this that I miss my old self. The one who’s more indifferent about what others have to say.

The one who had no problem reading out a poetry with insufferably annoying intonation or presenting an awful drawing of Australian continent in front of the whole class. People might judge the hell out of me, but it didn’t bother me half as much as it would now somehow.

I was like, “fuck it” and just came forward. I believed it’s better to get stuff done quickly and nip it in the bud for good, than put it off and prolong the ‘suffering.’ *sighs* Good ol’ days, back when I’ve not been exposed to all that’s mean and nasty in this adult world. lmfao

Joking aside though, I do wanna revert back to the old me who was brave and confident—only with some maturity and wisdom.

All in all, let’s start 2017 by turning a blind eye and a deaf ear to every bit of negativity trying to get to us. Those shrill, satanic whispers in our head that repeatedly say: “you are weak,” “you are stupid,” “you are not good enough,” “you cannot,” “you will fail,” etc., shut them out. They are not true, and will not necessarily come to pass. It can be otherwise, who knows?

I don’t know about you, but I don’t wanna chicken out no more, then die without knowing what a great person I might have been if I actually tried.

Bucket List

Legend has it that if you wish upon a shooting star, or technically meteoroid that burns up and glows after entering the Earth’s atmosphere, those wishes will come true. Since ancient times, many people across cultures have followed and believed in the myth. The streaks of light have even inspired the makings of numberless works of art. I’m standing with the other Pragmatics in this, though. In my humble opinion, these stuff are logically not related at all.

I kinda see the whole thing this way. They’re merely wishful thinking, until you have had your heart set on those things and put your nose to the grindstone. Then God will do some ‘assessment’ to determine if it’s about time your wishes are granted or like, not yet dude. With such way of thinking, too, I’m listing down my wishes into a bucket and put it up here. They are the experiences and achievements (of which I can think right now) I will buckle down to accomplish before I die.

1. Buy my parents a beautiful house with no less beautiful front and back yard where we can do some gardening. 🌷🌸🌹🌺🌻🌼🌿

2. Take my parents to the holy city of Mecca to carry out a pilgrimage and religious duty that is Hajj and then Umrah at the other time(s).

3. Invest in property and stocks (have always wanted to do so since I first went to the Stock Exchange building in Jakarta).

4. Travel across Indonesian alluring archipelago with family. To the real-world paradise, Raja Ampat. Woohoo!

5. Globe-trot with family, especially to:
  • Austria: When I was little, one of my parents’ acquaintances gave us a desk calendar with pictures of breath-taking landscapes in Austria. I’ve always wanted to set foot in the country since.
  • Norway: If you subscribe to SaraBeautyCorner youtube channel, you’ll know why. 😊
  • Denmark: Our father of modern fairytales H. C. Andersen’s motherland. And unsurprisingly, also the happiest country in the world.
  • Switzerland: The home of world’s finest chocolate, it’s got green meadows and the Alps too.
  • Netherlands: Mainly ‘blamed’ Hazel and Gus for this one, although I do want to bring my parents to Keukenhof to see tulips and try cycling through the streets of Amsterdam as well.
  • France: Eiffel Tower? Okay. But what make France so attractive to me personally are their desserts, their pastries. Kim Sam Soon got me falling in love at first sight with this exquisite Raspberry Mille-Feuille (starts @ 0:56).

  • The US: I don’t even know why, but I used to always like city lights better than the silence of a forest or mount. I thought it’d be quite an experience to stand among pedestrians in busy night Times Square a.k.a the Crossroads of the World, and then watch a broadway show!

6. Be able to speak fluently in Chinese—Mandarin preferably but Cantonese is okay, and/or Japanese.

7. Attend the concerts of my favorite singers either in Indonesia or overseas. We gotta admit that foreign slash western artists tend to overlook Indonesia despite being the 4th most populous country.

8. Meet Kyuhyun in person. This can be included in point 6, but besides concert, I really do want to go to his fan-meeting and/or fan-signing event. To be that intimate with him, I might be tongue-tied and going in full-blown cry mode, ugly-sobbing my face off in front of him. 😢

9. Visit American Horror Story and Game of Thrones filming locations. I want to meet Evan Peters and Emilia Clarke, take pictures with them and ask for autographs! 💕

10. Go to Madame Tassauds and take pictures with the doppelgängers of phenomenal figures like Gandhi, Mandela, Hussein, Sukarno and Hitler. I sure as hell would get goosebumps rolling down my whole body seeing them from a breath’s distance, especially Hitler’s, with how incredibly lifelike their wax figures are.

11. Open up a bakery or restaurant for my mum, since she has always loved baking and cooking and such.

12. Buy a vintage 1950’s house like Baker family’s in Flipped, or a rooftop house, or a normal house with a pyeong-sang (Idk if other countries have similar thing to this but in Indonesia we have this lookalike called bale bale) placed in the front yard à la Korean dramas. It’d be fabulous if I could have one with all three qualities combined.

I need to separate this from the house mentioned in point 1, cause this house is what I imagine as a peaceful place where our family members can hang our hat in. At the times when we feel like slowing down our fast-paced lives and take a deep breath of fresh air to recharge energy, or when we feel like we have had enough of such a lifestyle and reckon that this home is where we want to spend the rest of our lives in.

New Milestone

Less than four months into knocking the 20’s club door and bidding goodbye to my teens. I’m lowkey freaking out inside. I don’t know what it has in store for me, but I really am thrilled for all the good stuff. More courage, patience, wisdom, compassion and passion. But coming with them are its cons that I’m dreading, like the crippling anxiety and insecurity.

The hardest period in life is one’s twenties. It’s a shame because you’re your most gorgeous, and you’re physically in peak condition. But it’s actually when you’re most insecure and full of self-doubt. When you don’t know what’s going to happen, it’s frightening.
