Stumbled upon a post on IG last week, a screenshot of a viral news article about a South African man who is left traumatized after getting kidnapped and raped for three days straight by three women. And as dismaying as the news reads, there are still many nasty, churlish people who horse around chuckling at it. It makes me sick to my stomach already. Caption is deliberately omitted as it got my flesh crawling from seeing how despicable humans can be.

Simply click on the embedded post to see it and judge for yourself.

If you have a little more time to spare, might as well look into the comments. It’s cancerous down there--halfwits guffawing and making vile accusations about the poor guy. "If he got a boner, then he took pleasure in it," wrote one of them (not verbatim ac literatim, but you get the point) followed by a series of laughing emojis.

They left me baffled, and grossed out, and triggered almost simultaneously. It’s hard to believe one could casually, substantially downplay a sexual assault, for according to the weird logic functioning in their head, the victim looked like he enjoyed it. It’s because they don’t see rape as a common crime, they don’t see it as anything beyond sex. Slow claps!

Hardly surprising that, in every discussion about such cases, I encountered at least one ignoranus that shows senseless effort of always making victims feel, in any way, that they’re in the wrong. That if a living, breathing person with brain touches you inappropriately without your consent, or even drugs you with sleeping pills or aphrodisiacs, it was nobody’s but your own fault.

Everybody cared about and acknowledged basic human rights, until it was your body and you were in the midst of sexual violence case. They will

eager to jump on the victim instead of the assailants.

Back in 2013, a judge from Palembang High Court was under fire for making a problematic statement that both parties in rape might be reciprocally enjoy their intercourse (when asked whether  death penalty) during a fit and proper test to become the Supreme Court judge. No, you’re not alone wondering how someone with such effed up mindset could be up to lead the highest court in the hierarchy of legal jurisdiction.

His statement, which according to him was to "ease the tension," blew up and sparked flak from public. Netizens signed online petition demanding him to be pulled out of his candidacy. In the end, he got zero votes from the lawmakers. Those cruel words came from someone with high-regarded educational as well as professional backgrounds who-joking or not-should've known better not to say them. Learn the clear-as-day difference, between rape is done without mutual consent, even sometimes with force instead. If you deceitfully or forcefully make someone 'sleep’ with you, that's a rape. How do we enjoy something we don't even want? If you justify an assault, a violence, a crime, because it involves sexual intercourse which you figure can always and only be enjoyable, you are a gross piece of sht. Know better and don't pass that ignorance on to others. Please. From that ignorance is born a justification, then comes along victim-blaming. Those Godawful comments on that IG post kinda proved my point. Victim-blaming is a thing and it happens regardless of the genders. Many men have been victim-blamed like many women do. I've seen how woke people can be when rape victims are women (inb4 someone calls me misogynist out of nowhere), I wish these same people's stance won't change when it comes to male victims. Men can be the target of sexual assault, too. Stop with the double-standard against male victims, and also the generalization that men can only be rapists.

You don’t have to be a rape victim to know how bad the damage it has. It’s unfair that when people were brave enough to report an assault or attack, they got even more crap from public instead of protection and justice they deserve. It is no wonder, a big number of rape victims choose to shut up and live with trauma and misery, or worse, take their lives away. Seeking justice in today's society can equal self-humiliation. Quit blaming victims for the wrongful act and damage that befall them. Nobody will ever ask for it. Dem debauchers gotta be the one being held accountable for their inability to control their own urges. Period.

Note:
Ignoranus is legit a word (in other words, I didn’t coin that), a blend of "ignorant" and "anus"--an ignorant asshole. I know, right? You can’t be both stupid and rude... pick a damn struggle.

When It Comes To Love, Give Yourself The Advice You Would Give Your Daughter

x

What advice would you give your (hypothetical) daughter about love? Think about this for a second. Most of us who aren’t parents, cannot remotely imagine what it’s like to be a parent. The one thing that can come close, is if we have younger siblings we can say we’ve “watched grow up” rather than with whom we’ve “grown up with.” Either way, when we love someone who looks up to us, and they ask for advice, we’re inclined to always want them to treat themselves with kindness, love, patience, and respect.

My mother, for example, is very old school. She very much believes that a man must pursue a woman and she raised me to believe it too. There’s a running half-true, half-serious joke in my family that my father proposed to my mother multiple times before she finally agreed. That is the tradition that she was raised in and almost thirty-four years into their marriage, it’s kind of difficult to tell my mother that she’s wrong. But she’s also open-minded enough to know that men and women of her time and my time are different. So her most important advice has little to do with how people meet or the gender roles they must perform. No, my mother’s love advice has always been hallmarked by the stance that what one deserves is more important than what one wants.

When I think about it, it’s the kind of advice I want for all my siblings but especially for my baby girl – my little sister – who is my only sibling left in her teen years. In addition to my mother’s words, I tell my sister the things that I would tell a daughter: Don’t let anyone who is supposed to love you make you feel less than; never let important things be left unsaid; don’t chase someone who doesn’t want to be caught; don’t lead people on who you don’t want to be chased by; and of course that clichéd piece of advice every girl has heard at least once – a person who will make you cry is usually not worth your tears.

The sad truth, however, is that it’s hard to practice what we preach. Probably because when we love someone such as a sister or a child, we would take their pain away in a heartbeat. Watching them hurt especially hurting in romance – which can be quite cruel at times – makes us want them to get over their pains as quickly as possible, if not avoid it altogether. Yet sometimes when we find ourselves in the same position, we are less willing to take the advice we are so quick to give.

It always strikes me as true that most people are hardest on themselves. We are our loudest critics, our worst enemies; our very own nemesis is staring back at us in the mirror. And this is especially true in moments where we need to be a friend to ourselves. How many nights have we spent thinking, “What is wrong with me?” when someone doesn’t return the affection we tried to give? How many times have we harmed our emotional and psychological well-being by holding desperately onto something long after it has been over? How many times have we felt less than, simply because someone couldn’t see us the way those who love us do? The answer, I think, is far too often.

But what if you heard someone you loved crying at night because the person they wanted didn’t want them back? What if they told you they feel like no one is going to ever love them? What if they told you they just can’t seem to get anything right with this whole love thing? You’d probably tell them they’re beautiful, wouldn’t you? You’d probably tell them that sometimes disappointments are a blessing in disguise. You’d probably tell them that if they keep on keeping on and being the best they can be, and having a heart that is full of life and open to love, things somehow will work out.

All of this is what you should be telling yourself too. Because you are worthy of all the kindness, love, patience, and respect you give your loved ones; in any and all moments, but especially in the moments when love has made you feel less than.

Introverts' Problem
July 11, 20140 Comments

We are told that success in school,  business and our personal lives depends on our ability to behave like extroverts.

Such relevant quote which each and every one of us could second. Even in the small, daily activities, we are required to somehow keep our true introverted nature under wraps to clothe ourselves in a faux extroverted persona. Say, when we were to read out an essay in front of the class or when we were to do a presentation at office meeting. We might be sweating like mad, or biting nails, but still we would do it anyway.

I remember my mum and I were watching TV and I kept shaking my head at some TV personalities doing bold stuff on the show. Mum said, “this type of people who do not hold back are usually the ones to wind up successful.” That sentence has always stuck out to me since. I agree. People like us are trapped in out pride and ego most of the times, too embarrassed to do certain things. We always hold back, unbeknownst to us, that will not bring us anywhere.

Life is A Gift

Today before you think of saying an unkind word–think of someone who can’t speak.
Before you complain about the taste of your food–think of someone who has nothing to eat.
Before you complain about your husband or wife–think of someone who is crying out to God for a companion.
Today before you complain about life–think of someone who went too early to heaven.
Before you complain about your children–think of someone who desires children but they’re barren.
Before you argue about your dirty house, someone didn’t clean or sweep–think of the people who are living in the streets.
Before whining about the distance you drive–think of someone who walks the same distance with their feet.
And when you are tired and complain about your job–think of the unemployed, the disabled and those who wished they had your job.
But before you think of pointing the finger or condemning another–remember that not one of us are without sin and we all answer to one maker.
And when depressing thoughts seem to get you down–put a smile on your face and thank God you’re alive and still around.
Life is a gift – Live it, Enjoy it, Celebrate it, and Fulfill it. 💗

Look, I am a whiner, grumbler, grouch, you name it. If you think I’m not, too, annoyed by it, you're misguided. I do want to be a positive-minded, grown-ass woman and try to turn loose when the (sometimes) trivial things don’t go as I please, though. But there are moments when the pique keeps bottling up no matter how hard you try holding it down. :(

I have to say, all those sentences quoted above spoke to me on spiritual level. There are people far less lucky than you are. You wanna complain about what’s on your dinning table? Well, some other people have none. This post is not to take pity on the fate of others, but to inspire us and nail it in our head that life is a gift. Imagine being the only sperm cell out of 200 million that fertilized the egg. Mindblowing. Now if only we could add something in the lines of  “The only sperm cell among approximately 200 million competitors that eventually made it to life” in the Achievements column of our CV. LOL Don’t mind me.

Remember this, buds. You are the chosen one, you’re trusted with one chance of living. So let’s not take it for granted and live it to the fullest, since it can be whisked away at any second.

Sending hugs and kisses your way! <3
