Brain Dominance

You learn something new everyday.

Today, I just learned about brain lateralization as well as the brain dominance theory! Actually it is not my first time hearing such terms. I’ve been taught slightly about this left and right sides of brain’s correlation with intellectual ability in 10th grade’s Counseling class, but was never intrigued to know further until I read my Entrepreneurship modules when studying for midterms.

I looked it up to see if there was this particular figure similar to one in my module, and got it! It is called Brain Lateralization, which according to wikipedia, refers to how some neural functions, or cognitive processes tend to be more dominant in one hemisphere than the other.”

Based on the figure, several specialized functions of our brains’ left hemisphere include: analytical thought, planning, math/science, logic, etc. Meanwhile, the specialized functions of the right hemisphere include: emotional thought, impulsion, creative writing/art, imagination, etc.

From the functional differences above alone, I know I am what people say a left-brain dominant. It pretty much explains why all my grades that stood out at school were usually ones of the logical/exact sciences and languages (native and foreign), also why I did bad at art classes.

No scientific evidence, howbeit, has been found—that there are people who predominantly use the left side of their brains and there are ones who predominantly use the right. A number of studies have refuted the theory.

One of them being a large-scale study by the scientists of the University of Utah, that debunked the ‘myth’ with a whopping 1,000 brains being analyzed. As a matter of fact, all of the participants of the experiment were using both sides/halves of the brain equally.

Even so, this theory has grown into some kind of stereotypes that would have people continue to believe. Granted, many said that it’s just a groundless bunk. But I honestly think the idea of left-brain or right-brain dominance is quite reasonable—given that certain people are indeed more logical, methodical and analytical, while certain others are more on the artistic and creative side.

All in all, let’s just leave it to them researches, whether the brain dominance theory is a fact or a myth. One thing’s for sure, that functional laterality of human brains is a real thing originated from a research by Michael Gazzaniga and Roger W. Sperry in the 60s (please re-read through the linked wikipedia page before). Well, at least we gain some knowledge from this, don’t we?

P.S. I just gave the test a try. Click here, if you want to. Does it surprise you that my result doesn’t even surprise me at all?
